In 1992, the Nifty Archives was established as a place where authors could post stories for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities. It now contains some 70,000 plus files and is regarded as the largest and best of all the alternative erotic story archives. While quality may vary, honesty of expression prevails; it is a place where anyone can feel comfortable about posting their work. It is testimony to the Nifty Archives and it's contributors that a number of posted stories have now been published in paperback and even hardcover. The archives represents the diverse hopes, dreams, aspirations, fantasies, and experiences of the Queer Community. The Archive is maintained by an Archivist and volunteers and is supported by contributions from readers and friends.
Niftywriters is one of several Nifty chat rooms that have been established to provide places for the Nifty audience to meet and chat. These are hosted on the nevernet network, a nine year old independent network that is gay owned and operates in the United Kingdom. Niftywriter is most appreciative of Elijah, nevernet's owner and administrator, and his staff for their contribution to the worldwide gay community.
In early November of 2002, Justin Case, a writer and long time friend of the gay community and internet chat activist, established in cooperation with the Nifty Archives, the Niftywriters Chat Room. The room is a meeting place for all Nifty Archive writers and readers to meet, chill out, discuss stories, writing, life, and social issues. It's a great place to get to know new people and exchange ideas. Justin made it a very friendly place to make friends and talk about favorite stories. An important part of the room is the Saturday Night Authors Question & Answer Night, where a Nifty Author is interviewed and chatters get to meet and ask questions. As a result of Justin's commitment and vision, the room grew and soon became a close community of chatters. Sadly, in mid April of 2003, Justin was lost to us in an auto accident. His death left an emptiness in the whole Nifty and internet community.
Even in the midst of the community's shared sense of grief, members were dedicated to keep Justin's vision alive: the room and its ideals would continue. In late April at a meeting of members and OP‘s, Kip was asked to take over the room and was assigned ownership. In the years that have followed, the room continues to grow and serve the gay community of both readers and writers.
